Project Description:  Work with Dr. Pilar Egüez Guevara on issues of food justice. Here are some possibilities, but the details will be worked out with her:

  • If there are students interested in film-making, Spanish language and food, a nice project would be to edit a short video about a traditional dish in Esmeraldas. I have the footage but haven't had the time to edit it. In fact I have several ones in line, some from Ecuador, and others from Cuba. It would be lovely to have students engaged in the production of these films somehow.
  •  Otherwise, we could do something similar to what we have done in our ethnographic documentary summer course. In that case students would go out, find informants/consultants, conduct a few interviews and produce/ shoot the preparation of a dish. I don't know if any of this may be of interest. Here is a short video of what we did last summer in Bahia, although the videos the students filmed haven't been edited yet. http://quinuaqueens.wordpress.com/2014/10/01/anthropology-of-food-and-ethnographic-documentary-seminar/

Public Engagement Symposium Design a poster and handout materials and present them at the Public Engagement Symposium and the

Social Entrepreneurship and Service Learning Showcase (or a different venue if the showcase doesn't take place this year) to promote the work of SPAN 232 & 332.  (OJO:  Note the Wednesday, January 30 deadline to submit your proposal for the Public Engagement Symposium.)  Poster content and/or handouts would be a profile of a former SPAN 232/332 student, the impact the courses had on his/her studies, and how the person is still engaged.  (Prof. Abbott can give you some leads for people to contact to interview.)  If your proposal is accepted, you will present it at the symposium.  Click here to see how last year's students handled this project.
