2/3/20: 2 hours (Refugee Passage: The Spectacle of Magnanimity and the Politics of Nepali-Bhutanese Arrival in the United States) -

The event was a speech about the research Dr. Retika Desai did on refugees from Nepal and Bhutan. Specifically, Dr. Desai explained to us what she observed when she followed a family's trip from Bhutan to the New York airport. He was very interested to hear about the family and what happened during his trip. Before the trip, the family's husband bought a very expensive suit and bought it so he didn't look like a refugee. But when I arrived in transit it was not the case. People in transit saw him as a foreigner and saw the family as if they were going to a wedding. Dr. Desai explained that this irony because the family looked ready to go to a wedding that they were not invited. I was surprised to hear that the family and the other refugees were mistreated, specifically the staff did not give them food or gave them raw and expired food. Also where they stayed the night was uncomfortable and the bathrooms were dirty. Finally, the US Embassy staff takes a picture with the refugees, but the picture does not represent how difficult the trip was. This story is very similar to immigrants and refugees in Central America and Mexico. Finally, Dr. Desai explained how many refugees were poor in Nepal or Bhutan and remain poor, especially when they have no job, but they still have to pay the three thousand dollars for the trip. 4/4/20: 25 mins (Vis-a-Vis Orientation) with Michelle

2/6/20: 1 Hour, 40 mins at CAS (Abolition and Immigrant Justice)

This event was a discussion about abolition and immigrant justice. The panelists were Arianna Salgado, Barbara Galeano, King Wences and the 35th Chicago Councilor Carlos Ramírez-Rosa. Each of them had their own history of how they got involved in abolition and immigrant justice activism. More important two of the panelists were immigrants. King Wences talked about how he's been helping Latin and African American communities. Rey works to eliminate the gang database in Chicago. I explain that ICE uses this data to go places and detain immigrants. Arianna works to disburse campaigns that give funds to detention centers. Arianna works so that the undocumented remain in the United States and specifically leave the detention centers. Carlos is the 35th councilman of Chicago and helps many of the Hispanic communities. Especially fight for Chicago to pass laws that help immigrants. For example, that immigrants can get identification, that police do not help ICE and that immigrants know about resources and their rights. At last they talked about how society has changed during the decade. Above all, as many more immigrants are coming out of the shade.

10/2/20: 1 Hour, 30 mins at Leal Elementary (Teacher Lena)

10/2/20: 1 Hour 15 mins (Incarcerated Stories: Indigenous Women Migrants in the Settler Capitalist State)

This event was about Shannon Speed's book entitled "Incarcerated Stories: Indigenous Women Migrants in the Settler Capitalist State." Shannon wrote this book because she also has indigenous roots. Shannon began by talking about the book with a story about an indigenous woman he met at the detention center in Texas. The story was about Estrella who was from Guatemala and was 19 years old. Estrella left Guatemala because she had problems at home, especially she was raped by her family members. Estrella did not speak Spanish like many more immigrants who are indigenous. Shannon explained that the violence followed her, but also to other women she met. Finally, one day when Shannon went to the detention center to ask more questions, Estrella was not there. According, Estrella was released from the center and went to Washington to see a friend, but for Shannon that was not possible because Estrella told him he had no friends in the United States. No doubt Shannon knew that Estrella was kidnapped. Something Shannon talked about was about the rights of indigenous people and specifically the rights of indigenous women. I explain that the rights disappear when they reach the border. Above all, they eliminate the title of indigenous people, and put the title of Mexicans. Something Shannon explained was that women were arrested and are still in the detention center because the United States looks at them as danger. This event, a discussion, on February 6 was about different ways that Carlos Ramirez, Arianna Salgado, Barbara Suarez, and King Wences have been working for more immigration rites. One part of the discussion that I think is more interesting is the fact that one of the panelists explained how he was trying to agitate the officers hoping to be reached so he could see what the detention centers were like and documented it so that Other people who want to help too. All in all, I am happy to have attended this discussion, since it really aroused an interest in me, especially considering that the students of our campus have to fear that their relatives may be taken.

02/14/20: 5 hours (4th Annual Grant-A-Thon)

This “Annual Grant-A-Thon” was a group discussion where people talked about how to write a “grant” for organizations that need money to continue completing their goals. It was very fascinating to hear from organizations in the Champaign and Urbana area and the ways that writing “grants” can greatly impact an organization.
